On August 19th locals celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Huntingdon Farmer’s Market on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.
With 27 booths lining Dalhousie Street in Huntingdon this past Wednesday afternoon, this year’s summer Farmer’s Market has been officially deemed a success. So much so that the market will extend into the autumn—until October 7th to be exact.
The afternoon celebration housed a special treat for families with bouncy games, live music and face painting. Market coordinator Sylvain Gascon also organized a raffle and cash prizes for visitors who opted to participate in the draw—the proceeds of which went to the Maison des Jeunes Huntingdon, who also hosted a corn roast for hungry locals.
While the Farmer’s Market provides a bounty of fresh local goods and treasures for shoppers, it has also created an outlet for local farmers in the area. New to farming as of this year, Les Jardins Glenelm has benefitted greatly from their presence at the market. Attending since the beginning of summer, couple Sarah Rennie and Ian Ward has learned an incredible amount about the market they serve, and what shoppers are looking for—not to mention the fact that they have gotten to know their fellow farmers on a personal level. Local John Cavanagh has also been able to sell his seasonal produce, widening his market while letting him get to know the locals who truly appreciate his efforts.
If you haven’t made it out to the Farmer’s Market this season, be sure to make time in the near future to get your hands on some of the delightful produce and merchandise our locals have to offer. Shoppers note that as of September 9th, the market will kick off at 2 P.M. to respect daylight savings time. The market will continue to be held on Wednesdays until October 2nd.
