It’s that time of year again. That time when we sign up for gym memberships, vow to give up drinking, sugar, Facebook, or whatever vice is making a snag in our life plans and move forward.

For many, January is the emblem for a fresh start, much like how February is the month of love (or rather, the month where we realize that we need to lower our self- expectations and blame the frigid cold for making it too difficult to hold out on our resolutions). As for myself, I’ve simply decided that I’ll try to be a little better. More patient, less concerned with obsessively cleaning the dog hair off the sofa (also less concerned with kicking said dog off sofa), resigning to the fact that it’s totally fine that my son simply prefers yogurt in his hair rather than in his mouth—you know, the little things that can seem frustrating, but are really what make this life so memorable. That’s because I feel that these little things are really the big things in life, and learning to be happy with our lives as they are is the first step we can take if we ever seek to improve upon them. Please note: As wise as this may sound, I have learned this the hard way (and still am).

That being said, if you’re drinking a case of Mountain Dew every day or smoking like a chimney, giving up a tangible thing for New Year’s might be something worth considering, if only because the afore mentioned things are genuinely bad for you (as in, hard science has proved it).

So whatever road you find yourself upon this January, good luck! If this mild winter is anything to go by, this year looks like it’s going to be lovely.
