CVR’s Performing Arts Department is preparing to bring another surefire hit to the stage with their unique twist to the classic rags to riches tale of Cinderella.
The original Broadway musical – Cinderella – was penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It was their only musical originally composed for television. When the television program, starring Julie Andrews as Cinderella, first aired in 1957, it was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium at that time. Since then, Cinderella has continued to charm audiences in productions on stage and on television and has been adapted and recreated several times. C.V.R’s Performing Arts version of the classic tale is also a fusion of elements which will resonate with audiences familiar with the various Disney adaptations of Cinderella as well as touches unique to this production.
Based upon the classic fairy tale, and particularly the French version Cendrillon ou la Petite Pantoufle de Verre, this contemporary adaptation of Cinderella brings new life to the story of a young woman forced into servitude who dreams of – and achieves – a better life. Along the way, audiences will also meet her Step-Mother, a dashing Prince, a scheming Regent, a surprising ally and a passionate revolutionary. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella is transformed into an elegant young lady and is able to attend the ball to meet her Prince, but, in this version, she must also open the Prince’s eyes to the injustice in his kingdom.
The cast, comprised of the grade 11 Performing Arts class, and a host of volunteers are in the process of putting the final touches on the many dances, songs, costumes, props, set pieces and special effects required to transport all to Neverland! As well, the grade 10 and 11 dance classes are poised to present some spectacular dance segments throughout the show!
The Performing Arts Department will transport audiences back to their childhood as they rediscover the magic in this hilarious and romantic experience for anyone who’s ever had a dream. For truly, nothing is impossible for those who endeavour to “have courage and be kind”. This magical musical tour is set to take place on February 1 (8 pm), February 2 (8 pm) and February 3 (2 pm matinee and 8 pm). Tickets ($12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors) can be reserved today by calling the school at (450) 829-2381.
