Several dozen bags of illegal tobacco in bulk was seized from a truck by police on rang 6 in Sainte-Barbe during the evening of August 26.
The vehicle was stopped for a routine check because it appeared to be overloaded. This was when the officers discovered garbage bags filled with tobacco.
Two men from Montreal aged 36 and 31 were arrested. They were released after questioning but they have been summoned to appear at the Court House in Valleyfield to face charges of tobacco smuggling in accordance with the Loi de l’impôt sur le tabac. In the meantime the vehicle has been seized. The value of the tobacco is unknown.
Impaired by alcohol
A resident of Saint-Chrysostome was arrested in an inebriated state on route 209 in Saint-Rémi on the evening of August 23.
The 25 year old woman was driving erratically and when the Haut-Saint-Laurent Sûreté du Québec officers questioned her, she showed signs of impairment by alcohol.
The woman was then taken to the SQ station in Ormstown for a breathalyzer test. The results showed that she had more than 200 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, which is more than twice the legal limit.
She was released with a summons to appear at the Court House in Valleyfield where she will be charged with driving under the influence. Her driver’s license has been suspended for a period of three months and her car seized for 30 days.
Accident in Huntingdon
A driver in Huntingdon pulling out of a laneway failed to see a car driving on Lake St. and a collision ensued in the afternoon of August 24.
The two drivers, a Huntingdon resident aged 62 and a 48 year old woman from Dundee, suffered minor injuries. They were taken to the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown to receive appropriate care.
Injury on an off-road trail
A 57 year old man from Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) suffered minor injuries while participating in an off-road competition in Hinchinbrooke on the morning of August 23.
The man lost control of his antique car during a race and was injured. He was taken to the Hôpital du Suroît in Valleyfield to receive first aid.
