The 33rd Centraide Sud-Ouest fundraising campaign raised $503,400, well above the target amount of $495,000.
This was unveiled last Tuesday by Steve Hickey, the Director General for Centraide Sud-Ouest along with a number of volunteers and representatives from organizations assembled for the occasion at Microbrasserie Maltéus in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
In spite of the difficult economic times, the generosity of people in the region will make it possible to help 41 organizations throughout the Beauharnois-Salaberry, Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Haut-Saint-Laurent territory. There will be further contributions made between now and the official conclusion of the campaign on April 30.
Nathalie Descôteaux, Regional Director of TV Cogeco Valleyfield, served as chairperson for the 2015-2016 fundraiser. She said she was very pleased to have participated in the success of the campaign and in surpassing the objective.
« Collaborating in community and social development in our region is a value that I share and want to continue to promote », confirmed Descôteaux.
The biggest donators to the campaign remain, without a doubt, the employees and retirees from Hydro-Québec who contributed $142,000 followed by provincial organizations ($70,000) and Mouvement Desjardins ($25,000).
Donations from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield came to $73,000 while from the regions, $6,600 came from Vaudreuil-Soulanges, $10,000 from the Haut-Saint-Laurent and $6000 from Beauharnois.
An « enjoyable » campaign
According to Steve Hickey, who ran the 16th campaign for Centraide Sud-Ouest, this one was « particularly enjoyable ». He wanted to congratulate the unions in the region, especially from the public sector, for their assistance and support in spite of the pressure tactics in place.
Furthermore, the director general remarked that the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region stood out in particular this year with a significant increase of 13%. « We have extended into Costco in Vaudreuil-Dorion which increased our amount to $21,000, » he revealed.
Lastly, Steve Hickey indicated that there are now more volunteers at Centraide Sud-Ouest, which is a good sign for the coming years.
