I’m new to gardening. I’ve tried many times, but things like getting pregnant, giving birth and going on bed rest have really messed with my plans (bending down is hard when you can’t see your feet).

This is the first year in our new home, and thankfully, the former residents have done me the favour of planting perennials, which have limited my to-do list to a whole lot of weeding, which something that I love to do anyway, because it gives me an incredible feeling of satisfaction. Tangling with thirty-year-old vines is also a fantastic workout post pregnancy.

So this year, I am gardening with newfound resolve. Garden beds weeded, I headed into town to grab a few annuals, some organic veggie plants (and of course, a coffee) in order to get things started. Luckily for me, it was the weekend of HAECC’s annual plant sale, which is nothing short of a community event, complete with a BBQ and an open house for local non-profit Melissa’s Sunshine Camp. I stocked up on white and pink Columbines, begonias, zucchini plants—I even picked up some scarlet runner seeds to get this party started. It was an incredible event, with locals piling up in the driveway, touching base with each other, trading gardening secrets while supporting a great cause (all funds go to Horticulture and Garden Centre). It’s moments like these that make me so happy to be part of such a great community.
