The holidays are here!! It’s hard to believe, seeing as how there isn’t any snow on the ground, and I’m fairly certain that the grass is beginning to grow back.

But white Christmas or not, the 24th is nearly upon us. Cookies are being baked, gifts are being wrapped, eggnog is being brewed and travel plans are being ironed out (not to mention those couple of days off that many of us are looking forward to). Whether you’ve got big-scaled plans or just wee ones, Christmas is a time to sit back and reflect upon the year we’ve had, and to look forward to what is to come (all while dealing with the possibility of unruly/lovely family members making that annual visit for the holidays). It’s a time to let sleeping dogs lie (literally the case in our three-dog home) and let the little things fall by the wayside. And since we probably don’t have to worry about a giant snowfall anytime soon, you can put those shovels to rest, too.

My family wasn’t really into Christmas. It was a thing that we did, but we weren’t a big family, and it never really seemed to be a thing—at least not until I married into a giant family, that is. My in-laws are big-time Christmas people (they buy Christmas-themed napkins and everything), so the fever has caught on—I even splurged and bought a surplus of useless Christmas decorations, albeit more so that I could watch the reaction on our toddler’s face as he a) stares in awe and b) tries to pull them down and wear them as accessories. So this year, I’m really pumped about spiced eggnog (even if pregnant me can’t indulge), fir-scented candles and complete strangers dressed as Santa Claus. That being said, I hope you all enjoy the holidays, and take a little pleasure in the little things that make this time so special for all of us.

So to all of our readers at The Gleaner, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope this coming year is met with positivity for all of you.
