On Saturday September 9th, thousands of locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy the 146th celebration of the Havelock Fair.
This longtime tradition of showcasing rural life through music, food, crafts, and friendly competition dates back to 1871, and remains a Valley favourite. This year’s celebration didn’t disappoint with a wide range of talent on display.
Known to many as, “A real country fair,” guests had the chance to take in demonstrations on woodcutting, watch the numerous 4-H competitions, and admire bountiful displays of flowers, vegetables, jams, quilts and crafts. As is customary, local non-profits were on site to raise funds and educate the public on important issues like the health of our Chateauguay River. To satiate hungry visitors, there were many culinary selections including a full roasted chicken dinner from the Rotary, grillades, pulled pork sandwiches, and other fair staples. Talented regional musicians played throughout the day and highlights for the young ones this year included a bouncy castle, relay races, and the ever-popular petting zoo.
The Havelock fair is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who form The Huntingdon Agricultural Society- Division B and all entrance fees ($10 for adults and free for children) are returned to contestants in prize money bestowed in the numerous categories from baking and crafting, to gardening, and animal showmanship. Newly appointed president, Sylvie Lussier reminded the community via Facebook: “Havelock fair functions on a donation basis only, with all of the directors volunteering their time and services. We all spend lots of hours preparing for this and all money collected for this event is distributed in prizes.”
Organizers and future participants will once again set their sights on another year, with the mutual aim to enjoy an entertaining day for spectators and exhibitors alike. For more information on Havelock Fair 2018 see www.havelockfair.com.
