A facet of writing for The Gleaner that I enjoy immensely is getting to know my community better.
As a relative newcomer, it turns out there’s no better way to find out about all of the inspiring things happening in your area than to write about them. These past weeks I’ve covered more than a few eye-opening events including The Rural Youth Gala, a presentation on International Day Against Homophobia, and a talk from retired judge John Gomery about the evolution of women’s rights in Quebec.
Around mother’s day, it was fitting to recognize the enormous societal changes that have occurred in gender equality over the last 60 years. I also reflected (as I broke up fights between my two young boys) that I was looking forward to Monday—the day when I get to be in a quiet space and focus on my career. The reason I am able to pursue professional writing is in short answer: subsidized daycare.
As many Albertan or Californian families alike will concur, our Quebec system is enviable and I believe benefits both working parents and early childhood development. I feel lucky to live in a province that champions gender equality and puts ethics into action by mandating affordable, high-quality daycare. Thanks, Quebec.
Now back to work.
