The beloved club gave thanks to members and volunteers with a homemade brunch and many awards.
On Sunday, November 22nd, the Huntingdon branch of the 4H club held its annual banquet at the Zion church in Dundee. Enjoying a brunch prepared by Beryl Myatt, members enjoyed a presentation by Dundee local Andrea Soesbergen, who returned from the Youth Ag-Summit in Canberra, Australia in this past August. Ormstown native Brandon Maither, who represented the club at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair in 2015, also spoke to members about his experience as a member just before the awards portion of the ceremony began.
This year was an exciting one for the club, as it has seen its membership increase exponentially. This year, the club has a complete board of executives, made up entirely of junior members under the age of 15. Huntingdon resident Sarah Vandette was in attendance to represent the equine branch of the club, a newer addition to 4-H hoping to attract new members in 2016. Similar to the calf club, members do not need to own their own horses to participate, nor do they have to have farming experience, which has opened up the 4-H to a wider membership. The banquet saw the appointment of many new individuals, with former president Chris Nieuwenhof handing the torch to the young Emma Monique.
Held once a year, the banquet stands to celebrate the efforts of the youth in the area in their respective fields. It is a volunteer effort, and a great way for youths in the community to learn leadership skills. From gardening to showing livestock, the 4-H club has a little something for every youth in the community to enjoy. Planning for the 2016 year is currently underway.
