Searches in connection with illegal tobacco were carried out on a property next to a home on montée Smith in Saint-Anicet on October 9.

Altogether the police carried out six searches. They seized 1,790 kg of illegal bulk tobacco, five vehicles and a boat.

The operation was implemented by six officers from the Service des enquêtes sur la contrebande de la Sûreté du Québec and the SQ station in the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent. The investigation was a result of information obtained from the general public.

The suspects could be arrested and face charges under the Tobacco Tax Act.

Cigarettes seized

Again, in Saint-Anicet, more than 75 boxes containing sealed bags of illegal cigarettes were seized by the police from a U-Haul truck near Pointe-Trépanier on October 12.

No one was arrested. According to the Sûreté du Québec, the suspect in this case fled by way of Lake Saint-François with an accomplice who was waiting in a boat. The investigation is ongoing.

Seven injured in a collision in Saint-Anicet

A collision between two vehicles on route 132 in Saint-Anicet injured seven people although only three had to be hospitalized.

It occurred on October 10 in the early afternoon. A young, 23 year old driver from Val-d’Or failed to yield to a pickup truck and an accident ensued.

The five people in the car were injured but only one was taken to the Hôpital du Suroît for first aid.

The 57 year old resident of Saint-Hyacinthe who was driving the pickup truck pulling a trailer, and his 10 year old passenger were taken to the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown.

Accident on route 201

An accident involving three vehicles left two people with minor injuries on route 201 in Ormstown during the afternoon of October11.

A young woman of 20 rear-ended a car driven by a 42 year old man. The impact caused him to hit another car driven by a 59 year old man from Howick.

The young woman from La Prairie and an 8 year old boy, who was travelling with the 42 year old man from Ormstown, were taken to the Hôpital du Suroît for first aid.

ATV accident causes serious injuries

At the end of the day on October 12, two people suffered serious injuries when their all terrain vehicle ran into a rock pile after they lost control on an ATV trail located near route 138 in Ormstown.

The 29 year old driver from Ormstown and his 20 year old passenger from Saint-Eustache were taken to the Hôpital du Suroît in Valleyfield for treatment. According to the Sûreté du Québec, their lives are not in danger.

Cottages burgled

A man was arrested in connection with breaking and entering and theft at two, side by side cottages located on 68e Avenue in Saint-Anicet on October 9.

The suspect, aged 40, was intercepted in Saint-Anicet. He appeared at the Palais de justice in Valleyfield but was released under pledge to appear at a later date in criminal court.

The police have recovered the stolen goods; food, alcohol and other articles of little value. The individual also caused significant damage to both secondary residences.
