Working in partnership with the Eastern Townships School Board and the Riverside School Board, the New Frontiers School Board promotes their school as a viable institution of study for international students looking to educate themselves about Canadian culture while furthering their studies. The program has been a success, with a total of six international students being welcomed into Chateauguay Valley Regional High School this year alone. Heading up the program is Chantal Welburn, a long time member of the NFSB.
Serving on the board for 17 years, Chantal Welburn has worked with the International Student Program for the past two years. Responsible for easing the students into life at the school, she also finds host families for the visiting students.
This year, the majority of the students who chose to attend CVR were from China, with one student arriving from Belgium. When asked what were the most memorable moments for her after working so closely with these children, she said “Much like with my own children, as they are growing and learning, I think I feel an immense sense of pride and gratitude to be able to share so many firsts.”
Since the students arrive with varying skill levels of the English language, the school works with them to facilitate the transition. Part of the team is former China resident and local Mark Caza, who works alongside the students as they build up their knowledge of the culture and the language.
Next year, CVR will host a total of 12 students from across the globe — with a majority of the students hailing from China. As for staying in touch? Social media allows for the school to remain in contact with former students once they have returned home.
