A local 4-H branch shows their support for the community with a contribution to the Habitat for Humanity project.

On Wednesday, October 12th, the New Frontier School Board’s (NFSB) Châteauguay Valley Career Education Centre (CVCEC) and Habitat for Humanity Quebec hosted an information session and open house in order to inform the community about the “Our House” project. The endeavour, which is set to be completed by July 2017, will be the result of the combined efforts of the afore mentioned organizations. The home will be built on-site, in a modular fashion, at the Chateauguay Valley Career Education Centre, and is to be occupied by two lucky families, selected by Habitat for Humanity Quebec. On Wednesday evening, the Huntingdon branch of the 4-H visited the CVCEC’s Habitat for Humanity Open House, handing the CVCEC team a $500 donation that they raised via a series of fundraisers held this past summer and fall. In addition to this generous contribution, the organization’s vice-president, Nelleke Nieuwenhof, donated $465 to the project—the funds for which were raised at her 11th birthday party (held in September). Nieuwenhof chose to forgo gifts in lieu of contributions to the Ormstown project.

Since its inception 20 years ago, Habitat for Humanity Quebec has provided 20 Quebec families with access to home ownership. In this case, the duplex, located at 108-110 Isabelle Street in Ormstown, will provide two families with the opportunity to own a home. Mortgage payments will be based on the families’ combined income, which must be between $38,000-$55,000. No down payment will be required and no interest will be charged, making home ownership possible for two Chateauguay Valley families. This particular project, which was launched on August 25th, simply requires that the families be ready to volunteer 500 hours to the project—they must also have been gainfully employed for the past two years. The project makes for an exciting collaboration between the municipality of Ormstown, the NFSB and Habitat for Humanity Quebec.
