There’s no doubt about it—summer is creeping to a close. Yes, the trees are still green, and yes, it’s still warm enough to cannonball into the lake, but there’s no doubt about it—fall is almost here.

The apple harvest is underway, locals are in full baking mode and the morning dew on the grass almost makes it seem as if it had just finished pouring (it may very well have, but you get my drift). The tell-tale sign of school buses rambling down the road kind of gives the whole season-transition thing away, too, if you’re really in denial.

But I’m ready for it. All of it—the pumpkins, the chill in the air and the heavy sweaters (it’s also my favourite time of year for horseback riding, as long as there aren’t any hunters getting trigger happy in our part of the woods). While I enjoy the sun, I’m okay with winter too—which makes autumn sort of a midway bonus. Yes, the snow is annoying, and yes, fall means winter isn’t too far over the mountain, but I’ll take a heavy chill and a few more layers over earthquakes, alligators and weird exotic biting bugs any day of the week. Also, our particular plot of land isn’t receding into the ocean, so there’s another bonus. So cheers to fall, and all of the chilly joy it brings. May we all embrace it with a smile. And thick scarves.
