Another step towards managing organic waste has been taken in the Haut-Saint-Laurent MRC territory.

The Municipality of Sainte-Barbe has distributed some twenty brown bins to citizens as part of a pilot project intended to deal with kitchen and garden waste. Similar trials are underway  in Huntingdon and Godmanchester.

« These pilot projects will allow us to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages involved in treating organic waste. The 20 volunteers will have to receive training to this effect. We will also have to see how receptive the participating households will be, » indicated Louise Lebrun,  Mayor of Sainte-Barbe and Prefect for the Haut-Saint-Laurent MRC.

The arrival of the first bins precedes a large scale deployment anticipated for the planned implementation of a biogas production plant. The Haut-Saint-Laurent MRC has been working on developing  its waste management plan for a year. Some thirty individuals recently participated in a public consultation held in Huntingdon and a meeting was held on Tuesday in Très-Saint-Sacrement. The waste management plan is to be adopted next fall.

Almost half of household waste comes from the kitchen and the garden. If it is not composted, this waste goes to a landfill and has an impact on the environment. Now, thanks to a third collection, this waste will return to the earth as part of a natural cycle.

A pilot project is also underway in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield to limit the amount of waste sent to landfills. On Monday, some 300 Valleyfield households received brown bins to launch the process of collecting organic waste in the territory.
