As of April 1st, 2016, Canada’s population had surged to 36,155,487—an increase of 106,966 from January 1st, 2016—the highest gain in a quarter since 1989, when it increased by 115, 240.
According to results released by Statistics Canada, this notable increase is due largely to Syrian refugees entering the country—a total of 86,216 men, women and children arriving in Canada in the first three months of 2016. Such a record was last set in 2010, when 84, 292 immigrants entered the country during the final quarter of the year. That being said, the population increase in 2016 did not surpass that of 2015. While the population continues to grow throughout our nation, it is interesting to note that certain local regions have experienced a significant increase in the local population.
According to the most recent census, the following population changes have been noted (from 2011-2016) in the following counties:
-Huntingdon: +0.5%
-Godmanchester: -1.6%
-Elgin: -1.7%
-Ormstown: 0.0
-Saint-Chrysostome: +4.9%
-Howick: +23.5%
-Franklin: -3.1%
-Havelock: -2.1%
