“I don’t know what I want to do when I finish high school,” is something students feel and parents hear often, explains Kim Wilson, the CLC Development Agent for the New Frontiers School Board (NFSB).
On Wednesday, October 19th, Ms. Hamilton’s Grade 10 “Target Your Future” class (of Chateauguay Valley Regional High School) visited Ormstown’s Châteauguay Valley Career Education Centre (CVCEC) for the first of many Vocational/Trade program visits, an opportunity offered through the NFSB.
On this particular Wednesday, the students spent their 3rd period exploring CVCEC’s Construction Carpentry program—an experience that offered the students the chance to experience firsthand what a day in the life of a construction carpentry student is like—students were also fortunate enough to observe the carpentry students working on the “Our House” project, a venture that the centre is working to produce alongside Habitat for Humanity Quebec. Coordinator of Carpentry Alice Loney, and Construction teacher Stephane Samson were on hand to greet the students. Samson gave the young visitors a run down of the Construction Carpentry program, explaining the prerequisites to enter, and more importantly, what job options are available to students when they graduate.
Going forward, students will have the opportunity to converse with representatives from each of the vocational programs offered via the New Frontiers School Board. At the end of each visit, students will be presented with the chance to be a “student for the day” at one of the three career centers located in the Valley—a CLC team will work with the teachers and parents involved to ensure that students get to and from the centers—an opportunity made possible in part by centre director, Anita Duwel.
