Trout unlimited (Châteauguay Chapter) and the organization Ambioterra are inviting the population to discover the rich biodiversity of the Châteauguay River during the fly fishing demonstration and fishes identification activity on September 24, from 10 am to 1 pm at 95 Fairview streets, in Huntingdon. In case of heavy rain this activity will be postponed to Sunday.
Come and learn how to fly fish with experienced fisherman from Trout unlimited. Identify your catch with help from Ambioterra’ biologists. A special attention will be given to invading exotic species like the round goby and to species at risk like the channel darter and the sand darter.
Around 70 fish species can be found in the Châteauguay River, mostly sport fishes and endangered fish species. However, the worsening water quality, shorelines degradation and the growing presence of invading species like the round goby contribute to the reduction of native fish species in the River like the speckled trout. With this activity Ambioterra hope to raise awareness in the regional population about the need to protect and maintain the Châteauguay River and the fish population healthy
“The Châteauguay river is only 30 minutes away from Montreal and is a very popular fishing ground for sports fisherman. But the water quality and shoreline degradation as well as invading species are causing a problem for indigenous fish species. Let many among us to protect the River”, stated Karel Ménard, Ambioterra’president.
This activity is made possible with the financial help of the Canadian Government (Environment Canada) and the Heritage faune foundation as well as the Fondation de la Faune du Québec.
This activity is totally free and open to everybody! You will need your fishing permit if you want to catch some fish in the Châteauguay River.
Registration is not mandatory but recommended. If you want to know more about this activity: 450 637-8585, e-mail [email protected], Facebook or visit www.ambioterra.org.
