Prepared by both parents and members of the Hemmingford Elementary School Governing Board on March 19th, the 3rd Annual Spaghetti Supper is a volunteer effort, encouraged by generous local sponsors.
The school’s major fundraising event of the year, this edition of the spaghetti supper will offer a lunch service in order to make it more accessible to all. Hosted by the Club de Golf Hemmingford on March 19th, lunch will be served from 11:30-1:30 P.M. while the supper service will begin at 4:00 P.M., ending by 7:00 P.M. The meal, which is as much a social outing as it is a supper, will include homemade spaghetti, marinated vegetables and dessert, served alongside refreshments. For those that can’t make the sit-down meal, takeout is available.
The brainchild of a parent three years ago, all funds raised go towards supporting school trips, particularly to fund the high cost of transportation, as well as to materials for the school. In 2016, a majority of the funds will also go towards improving the schoolyard. According to Pascale Giroux, chairperson of the school’s governing board, the event has gained much popularity over the years. “Everyone is anxious to attend,’ says Giroux. ‘Not only for the good cause of helping out a little school, but to participate in our silent auction, hockey ticket raffle and the many door prizes up for grabs. For the last two years the golf club has been a full house.” This popularity is why volunteers have opted for two meal services.
“This event is where you see a community come together. Parents and HES staff volunteer their time beforehand in the preparation and gathering of sponsors,” says Giroux, who is always impressed by the number of volunteers and staff that come together on the day of the supper—not to mention the number of locals that sponsor the event. “This proves that the community has our children's best interest at heart—the profits help to offer quality educational extras to support the teachers and allow every student to shine in a healthy environment with wonderful smiles,” added Giroux.
