More than fifty cases of illegal cigarettes were seized from a pickup truck on rang 4 in Godmanchester on September 8.

The MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent Sûreté du Québec pulled the vehicle over for verification because it appeared heavily loaded. This was when the officers discovered the brown boxes containing cigarettes.

A 41 year old American from Hogansburg (New York) was arrested. He has received a summons to appear at the Palais de justice in Valleyfield to face charges of smuggling illegal tobacco in connection with the Loi de l’impôt sur le tabac. In the meantime, the vehicle was seized and the individual had to post bail for his release.

Driver hits mail box

Alcohol may have been the cause of an accident that occurred during the evening of September 3 on the Gore Road in Hinchinbrooke. A 38 year old driver drove off the road, hit a mail box and ended up in the ditch.

The man and his14 year old passenger were transported to the Hôpital du Suroît in Valleyfield to be treated for minor injuries. The police suspect that the driver was impaired by alcohol. A blood sample was taken at the hospital and the results will determine whether or not the individual will be charged.

Driver loses control of car

A 32 year old driver in Franklin was probably trying to avoid an animal when he lost control of his sports utility vehicle which went into the ditch and then hit a tree.

The accident occurred on montée Durocher during the morning of September 8. The Howick resident suffered minor injuries and was transported to Hôpital Anna-Laberge in Châteauguay to receive first aid. A baby in the vehicle was unharmed.

Car leaves road

Illness may have been the cause of a driver leaving the road during the afternoon of September 4 on Saint-Joseph Street in Havelock. A 36 year old man lost control of his car and ended up in the ditch. The Saint-Chrysostome resident was injured and was taken to the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown to be treated.

Vehicle subject of mischief

The owner of a car was unpleasantly surprised to find that his vehicle had been damaged while parked on Prince Street in Huntingdon on September 4. Two doors and the passenger side fender had been scratched. Damages have been estimated at several hundred dollars.

Theft of the lower unit on a boat motor

The lower unit of a boat motor was stolen from a lot on 62e Avenue in Saint-Anicet, between the 2nd and 4th of September. The boat was on a trailer when the thief un- screwed the lower unit of the Mercury motor. This piece of equipment is valued at more than $4,000 according to the owner.
