On Wednesday December 9th, Marc-Olivier Perras was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Karine Faubert which occurred in Augus, 2011. He was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
The jury handed down its decision after several days of deliberation, declaring Perras guilty of murdering Karine Faubert by firing two shots. She was his ex-girlfriend to whom he owed money. Her body was found in August, 2011on a country trail in Godmanchester.
The jury adhered to the evidence presented by the Crown which, by its own admission, was circumstantial. There was no direct evidence linking Perras to the crime, but the prosecution presented several incriminating factors during the trial.
In particular, the accused was observed throwing a box into the rivière Saint-Louis during an undercover operation. SQ divers then fished out the box which contained, among other things, a firearm of the same type used against Ms Faubert, as well as ammunition.
Marc-Olivier Perras was not called as a witness during his trial and the defence did not present any evidence, limiting themselves to revealing flaws in the evidence from the Crown, including the fact that the Sûreté du Québec did not present any photographs or video footage of the undercover operation.
Me Martin Latour, lawyer for Perras, indicated that he would look into the possibility of an appeal.
