The Haut-Saint-Laurent is sharing the pleasure of reading with its families. Violette’s Book Houses, which are boxes filled with books for 0-5 year olds, will be located in 13 municipalities in the territory.
Operating under the slogan, Take a book, Give a book, the books in the houses were originally donated by community organizations and then sorted by the team at the Community Learning Centre.
« Violette’s Book Houses help with reading and writing, » remarked Sophie Masse, Coordinator for réseau 0-5 Haut-Saint-Laurent and the Maisons de Violette. « In some municipalities, libraries can be far away, while these book houses will be installed in public places and be easily accessible. »
This is a community project aimed at providing a service to families in the territory.
The launch of Violette’s Book Houses took place at the Chateauguay Valley Career Education Centre last Thursday. Students from the carpentry course, under the supervision of their teacher, John Hodges, built the boxes with the purple roofs.
This colour is a reminder of the idea behind the Maisons de Violette, a family resource in the Haut-Saint-Laurent. Stickers and signs will allow families to learn more about the services available in the territory.
Each municipality will now be able to decorate and manage its own box. Godmanchester and Hinchinbrooke have already painted their boxes yellow and green; their municipal colours.
Find your local Book House on the www.croquelivres.ca web site. The thirteen book houses in the Haut-Saint-Laurent will bring the total number of book houses in Quebec to 685.
The project was funded by Avenir d’Enfants
