With the tourist season approaching, merchants in the region can sometimes be the target of fraudsters using counterfeit money to cover the costs of goods and services. The RCMP offers a free workshop that helps business owners identify counterfeit money more easily.

According to Kimberlee McCullock, spokesperson for the RCMP Merchants Against Counterfeiting Program, this workshop offers an excellent opportunity to learn how to identify the security features of Canadian and American bank notes including the new polymer series.

« The presentation is well suited to meet the merchants’ needs. It will allow them to increase their awareness of the various means of protection and learn about the resources available to help them detect counterfeit money, » she explained. « The team will come to the merchants’ place of business in order to offer a more flexible and efficient service. Educational material will be provided to all employees to help raise awareness. »

The border areas in Southern Quebec will be specifically targeted by the RCMP between now and the end of August because the number of American tourists and dollars will be higher than normal.

The 30 minute workshop is offered in French or English.

The workshop was created by the Montreal RCMP Financial Integrity Team in collaboration with the Bank of Canada (http://www.banqueducanada.ca/) and the U.S. Secret Service (http://www.secretservice.gov/).
