On November 1, the CVR Spartans won the first junior women’s rugby championship in the Montérégie.
The team from the Ormstown high school confirmed its championship during the final day of the League event. The Spartans beat the players from école Saint-Joseph de Saint-Hyacinthe with a score of 10-5.
The tie between the two unbeatable teams was finally broken. CVR finished the season with 11 wins and one tie [against école Saint-Joseph], good for 46 points in the ranking which was five better than the team that placed second.
The Spartans 1 registered 306 points, good for the best offense. The 55 conceded points made them second best offense.
A second CVR team registered with the League took third place.
“It was a success,” said Guillaume Duhamel, coordinator for the Montérégie du Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec championships. “There were already seven teams from five schools in the Montérégie and it all went very well.”
The women’s junior championship will be back next fall, but there will be rugby to watch in the Montérégie starting next spring. “We have a project to organize a junior men’s championship,” indicated Deguire. “Nothing is in place at the moment, but we’re working hard to get a men’s league started in the spring.”
