Three grade six students at Hemmingford Elementary School participated in the Pupils’ Parliament on May 6 at the National Assembly in Québec.
This activity provides students with the opportunity to be deputies for a day and experience the various steps involved in drafting a bill.
Madison Campbell, Jade Chamberlain and Matthew Liddle-Grainger had the chance to find out more about a deputy’s role as well as how parliamentary activities work at the National Assembly.
Stéphane Billette, MNA for Huntingdon and Chief Government Whip, was pleased with their participation. « The Pupils’ Parliament is an unforgettable life experience that will be a marker on their path to becoming future voters. Who knows, maybe one of them will be an MNA, a minister or even premier? » declared Deputy Billette.
Three draft bills drawn up by the students were studied. They dealt with market gardening, teaching first aid in elementary school, and the requirement that all students in cycle three elementary participate in an intramural sport twice a week.
The Pupils’ Parliament is part of the National Assembly’s education mission which provides for dynamic learning based activities that contribute to raising awareness among young people about the workings of a democratic parliamentary system.
